Transitioning from school to the workplace

All young people face challenges when making the transition from school to work, but this process can be even more complicated for those living with a disability or neurodiversity. Thankfully, help is at hand.

As a HR consultancy, Confident Futures event sponsor SYLO Beyond HR is passionate about creating diverse teams, and a large part of this work is preparing students for employment. Here are their top tips for individuals with SEND looking to make the jump.

  1. Research employers

Many companies have inclusive policies and can accommodate various needs, so taking the time to look into the culture of a business can be a great place to start. Nonetheless, don’t discount an employer because you can’t find evidence of inclusivity – they might just not be good at promoting it.

  1. Play to your strengths

Remember, there is only one you. Everyone has strengths and abilities, and understanding yours and how they can benefit a business is key to feeling confident during interviews and talking about why an employer should take you on.

  1. Maintain open communication

Relationships are built by communicating and it is a two-way thing. Being clear about your preferred communication style, environment and specific accommodations will help you to build a strong foundation with your employer and get things off to a great start.

  1. Manage your expectations

Whilst being clear on what you need is important, be mindful that not all employers will have experience or knowledge on supporting neurodiverse employees or those with disabilities. Working collaboratively and educating your employer will mean that they will be able to support you effectively in the workplace.

  1. Build a support network

Surround yourself with people who support you as you navigate this new chapter. Having a handful of individuals who really understand you will mean that you have a ready-made team of mentors, coaches, and friends who you can turn to for guidance.

Find out how you can further boost your career at our upcoming Confident Futures skills show, where around 50 disability-confident employers – including lead sponsor SYLO – will be revealing the vast opportunities open to SEND students.
