Bucks Growth Sectors: Construction

Construction

Buckinghamshire’s construction industry is a-booming! With over 4,400 construction businesses in the county – making up nearly one in every seven companies – the sector is growing faster than most others, opening up exciting job opportunities, higher salaries and better benefits.

As of 2023, there are around 14,000 people in Bucks working in construction, from electricians and plumbers, to roles focused on tackling climate change such as heat pump installers and environmental impact assessors. This rapid growth is thanks to huge projects like HS2 and East West Rail coming to the area, along with the government’s push for more housing. Better yet, the future of construction looks even brighter, with tons of opportunities to help the environment by making homes more energy-efficient and building renewable energy facilities.

Want to be part of this exciting future? Here are three of the top construction employers in Bucks leading the way.

Taylor Wimpey

What?

Taylor Wimpey is one of the UK’s largest homebuilders, delivering hundreds of high-quality properties across the nation.

Where?

As well as being headquartered in High Wycombe, Taylor Wimpey is expanding its presence in the county with construction currently taking place in Aylesbury and Milton Keynes.

Why?

Taylor Wimpey boasts the highest average NHBC Construction Quality Review (CQR) score among major housebuilders. The company is also at the forefront of sustainability, integrating cutting-edge technologies and eco-friendly solutions in its homes to create a greener future.

How?

Whether you’re passionate about construction, project management or design, Taylor Wimpey’s Trainee Scheme is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to get into the world of construction. Offering a hands-on, personalised development journey, the programme equips you with the skills and knowledge needed to become a successful professional in the industry.

TSL Projects

What?

A global leader in technical engineering and construction, TSL specialises in creating facilities that are vital to the modern world, such as Data Centres, Advanced Manufacturing, Food Production, Logistics, and Pharmaceuticals.

Where?

TSL’s head office is located in our back garden, the leafy Gerrards Cross. From here, it manages and oversees projects around the world, working in multiple countries across Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Why?

One of the key draws of TSL is its passion for creating spaces for the next industrial revolution, whilst ensuring it leaves a positive environmental and social legacy for communities everywhere. Whether it’s delivering food facilities to feed our growing populations, data centres to power the digital age, or pharmaceutical facilities providing vital medicines and medical devices, each TSL project has a role in helping society move forward.

How?

TSL is always looking for “talented, enthusiastic people who dream big”. If you’re interested in joining the team, even if you don’t see a role on its careers’ page that suits you, send the team your CV and a cover letter.

Cala Homes

What?

Founded in Scotland in 1875, Cala has decades of experience crafting premium homes.

Where?

Earlier this year, Cala launched a new business division, Cala Southern, to help the company grow across the South of England. However, with construction projects taking place in various locations across the UK, Cala provides opportunities to work in many parts of the country.

Why?

Cala is focused on doing the right thing for the environment, which is why they’ve just built their first-ever net-zero-carbon home. This is a huge milestone for the company as it will provide valuable information around creating more sustainable homes in the future.

How?

Cala’s Early Careers programme offers a variety of paths into construction, including: short term paid placements of three, six, nine or twelve months; degree apprenticeships which see students study towards a degree qualification that directly relates to their role at Cala; and apprenticeships in partnership with CITB.
