Why Transferable Skills Matter
Qualifications can help open doors, but employers are increasingly looking for the skills that help people succeed in the workplace.
Research by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) identified six key transferable skills that are expected to be just as important as qualifications when it comes to getting and keeping a job in the years ahead.
These skills can be developed through education, work experience, volunteering, hobbies and everyday life.
The Six Skills Employers Value
1. Collaboration
Most jobs involve working with other people. Being able to contribute to a team, share ideas and support colleagues is highly valued across every sector.
2. Communication
Strong communication skills help you explain ideas clearly, build relationships and work effectively with customers, colleagues and employers.
3. Creative Thinking
Employers look for people who can think differently, generate new ideas and approach challenges with an open mind.
4. Evaluating Data
As workplaces become increasingly data-driven, being able to interpret information and make informed decisions is an important skill across many careers.
5. Organisation, Planning and Prioritisation
Managing your time, meeting deadlines and balancing different responsibilities are skills that employers consistently value.
6. Problem Solving and Decision Making
Being able to identify challenges, consider solutions and make effective decisions can help you stand out in the workplace.
Building Your Skills
Transferable skills can be developed both inside and outside the classroom. Activities such as part-time work, volunteering, clubs, sports teams, work experience and group projects can all help you gain valuable experience.
The more examples you can share with employers, colleges or universities, the better prepared you'll be for future opportunities.
