What to look for at open days
Courses
Open days are your chance to explore the subjects you’re interested in, whether you know what course you want to apply for or not. Professors tend to be at these events, along with current students, so you can find out more about applications, modules and assessments.
What to ask…
What are the teaching methods of the course?
Does the course offer any opportunities to study or work abroad?
How is the course assessed?
Facilities
Since university will probably be your first time living away from home, it’s important to find out whether you’ll have everything you need to thrive. As well as checking out the relevant course facilities (seminar rooms, lecture halls, laboratories, workshops, etc.), don’t forget to explore the gyms, study spaces and restaurants in the area.
What to ask…
What are the facilities like for this course?
Is there a student gym and how much does it cost?
How big is the library and how late does it stay open?
Accommodation
Not only do open days offer a chance to tour the university, you also get a peek at student accommodation. Where you stay in your first year can really affect your overall experience, so make sure you get a sense of proximity to campus, how nice the rooms are and whether you’ll be sharing a bathroom…
What to ask…
What’s the likelihood of getting a place in student accommodation?
What’s the cost of student accommodation?
Are you allowed to have guests stay?
Clubs and societies
Being a student is about much more than what you study. Use open days to discover what clubs and societies the university offers – there are usually hundreds! – and get to know the people who run them. You’ll never come across a better opportunity to find your tribe than at university.
What to ask…
What are the different clubs and societies on offer?
How much is membership?
Are there any volunteering opportunities available through the university?
Student support
Universities recognise the importance of student wellbeing, so they’ll be happy to answer any questions you have about support services at open days. After all, without taking care of your mental health you won’t be able to enjoy everything else on offer.
What to ask…
What support services does the university offer?
Where can I go if I need help with my assignments?
Does the university offer deadline extensions for extenuating circumstances?
